CURIOUS NORTH was a year long radio project I created at WXPR Public Radio in collaboration with Hearken to answer listener questions about northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The kickoff to the project involved a road trip around our listening area, which won Hearken's "Champions of Curiosity Award for Best Promotional Strategy to Solicit Questions and Votes."

As it turns out, it has to do with the longstanding isolation of the Upper Peninsula and a longstanding Finnish tradition.
The oldest ones are growing out of the sides of cliffs on the Niagara Escarpment and are over a thousand years old.
